Dominica: PM Roosevelt Skerrit addresses nation at start of hurricane season

The Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica, Dr Roosevelt Skerrit, marked the beginning of the Hurricane season in the Caribbean. The Prime Minister addressed the people of Dominica at the beginning of the hurricane season. He asked the people of his country to exercise caution during the 2023 Atlantic Hurricane Season. PM Skerrit made these remarks at the Press Conference on Thursday, June 1, 2023.

June 1 marks the beginning of the Atlantic Hurricane Season in the Caribbean regions. The experts have predicted that the 2023 hurricane season will be “near normal”. According to the reports, 12 to 17 storms will mark the season. Out of these, 5 to 7 batteries could become hurricanes, and four could become major hurricanes. Prime Minister Skerrit remarked, “I don’t know why they call it near normal” he added, “One is too many.”

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Dr Skerrit noted that we are hurricane experts in Dominica. He reasoned that they know it only takes one major event to shatter livelihoods and cause major upheaval in our lives. Accordingly, Prime Minister Dr Skerrit stressed the importance of early preparedness. He believes it allows people to respond better if a storm hits them. Consequently, the Prime Minister listed the steps they can take to protect themselves.

The Prime Minister stated that the relevant public service departments would implement these throughout the next few days and the hurricane season. PM Roosevelt Skerrit encouraged the people of the Commonwealth of Dominica to remain alert and cautious to protect their and their families lives and property. The prime Minister stated that his government of Dominica is committed to protecting the people of Dominia.

They have demonstrated this commitment by increasing the shelter capacity of the country. They have also strengthened the response machanisms at the community levels. Additionally, the government has introduced new building codes to ensure more resilient structures. Finally, the government of Dominica is increasing awareness of disaster risk management in the country. PM Skerrit shared that they have activated the National Emergency Planning Organization.
