Aurat March: An annual rally event observed by the women of Pakistan to commemorate International Women’s Day turned violent after the marching women got caught in a clash with police officials. The women of Pakistan organize the rally to celebrate womanhood and express their grievances. During the 2023 edition of the rally, women and transgender people from all walks of life gathered together when police beat the marchers to stop the rally march.
The violent clash between the police and the marchers occurred outside the press club. The police officials allegedly tried to stop the members of the transgender community from joining the rally. The officials questioned the community when they tried to enter the Aurat March, which marked the beginning of the clash.
The women in the march shouted slogans about women’s rights and the participants alleged that the officials tried hard to stop the rally by indulging in a verbal argument with the participants. The authorities claimed that large groups of women were joining the march. The violence that the people observed during March 8, Aurat March, led to several media representatives getting into the thick of the violence.
The reporters also shared their concerns regarding the incident. They also claimed they covered the incident peacefully before the violence broke out. Meanwhile, a woman reporter from a local news channel also sustained injuries. The Federal Minister of Pakistan, responsible for the Ministry of Climate Change, Sherry Rehman, also attended the event. She also used social media to condemn the violence during the Aurat March.
She shared that she would seek an enquiry into the incident. She claimed that the Islamabad Police did not have any right to lathi charge on the women, leading a small, peaceful procession.
