Former Senate President of Nigeria Ike Ekweremadu, charged by a United Kingdom court in the case of organ harvesting, had been adjourned till October 31, 2022.
The trial, which has caught the interest of several Nigerians, resumed yesterday (Thursday), August 4, after the former Senator spent 43 days in detention in the United Kingdom.
According to the sources, following the UK court’s adjournment of the organ harvesting case, he will be kept in custody till the next adjourned date.
The wife of former Senator Beatrice was recently given bail, and he has been shown support, with the Ohanaeze Ndigbo earlier revealing plans to send a legal representative for him in the UK.
One of the most complex things about the case is that the reported victim of organ trafficking, David Nwamini who claimed that he was a minor, aged 15 and was forced to donate his kidney, something which was later disclosed to be false when reports disclosed otherwise that he is actually 21.
As per the prosecutors in the case, Ekweremadu and his wife thought to remove the alleged victim’s kidney so that they could give it to their sick daughter.
Former Senator Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice Ekweremadu, were charged in the United Kingdom on June 23 this year by London Met Police officers and were arrested with a plot to traffic a minor to the UK to harvest his organs.
The case was transferred to Central Criminal Court in London, also called the Old Bailey, where the wife of a former Senator was granted bail on severe terms.
However, the Senator was rejected bail as he was said to be a flight risk.
