Commonwealth Games 2022: Nigeria bags eight medals with three gold

Chioma Onyekwere, the Reigning African champion, made history on the night of Tuesday, August 02, at the Alexandra Stadium located in Birmingham as her best throw of the season of 61.70m was good enough to lead her to the top position.

Although she was ranked second among the other throwers on parade before the finals, Onyekwere proved everyone wrong by beating the fans’ favourite to the gold medal.

Apart from Onyekwere’s gold medal, the present national champion, Obiageri Amaechi, also secured the bronze medal in this event. Amechi took the bronze medal home with a throw of 56.99m.

Both the medals won on Tuesday night are the first set of medals Nigeria has won in Athletics during the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

On the other hand, Nigeria also grabbed silver in the weightlifting category, in which Taiwo Laidi took home a medal in the women’s 76Kg category.

She added to the list of awards of Nigeria’s medal haul after a total lift of 216kg in the Snatch and clean & jerk category.

Moreover, a bronze medal in weightlifting was recorded by Mary Taiwo Osijo. Osijo achieved the medal in the Women’s 87kg Weightlifting with a combined lift of 225kg (102kg in Snatch and 123kg in Clean & Jerk).

With all these wins, Nigeria now stands with eight medals comprising of three gold, one silver and four bronze but has fallen by one position in the medals tables and has got the 10th spot.
