Dominica: Melissa Skerrit greenlights hurricane Preparedness Initiative

The minister of housing in the government of the Commonwealth of Dominica, Melissa Skerrit, has shared an update on the hurricane season. The hurricane season began in the Caribbean region on June 1, 2023. The Minister of Housing and Urban Development shared that they are highly committed to protecting the life and property of the country’s people. Accordingly, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has started the DIY Hurricane Preparedness Initiative.

According to the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, it is important for the country to take preventive measures ahead of the start of the hurricane season. Accordingly, The Ministry is providing vital supplies that enable residents to enhance the resilience of their homes and protect their families. Meanwhile, The weather department has claimed that the upcoming hurricane season will be “near normal”.

However, the government has made the commitment to ensure the people do not face any devastation of life and property. Accordingly, The government of the Commonwealth of Dominica urged the citizens to strengthen their homes and protect their families. Further, Minister Skerrit urged the people to ensure their home is adequately secure!

Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Melissa Skerrit urged the people to contact their constituency representative for distribution information. To be eligible for the initiative, Applicants must:
1. Be residents of Dominica.
2. Be committed to actively participating in the initiative.
3. Be willing to comply with all relevant building codes and regulations.
4. Have access to the necessary tools or human resources to install the materials themselves.
5. Be willing to provide feedback or participate in monitoring and evaluation activities.

The hurricane season will run from June 1, 2023, to November 30, 2023. The country’s Prime Minister, Dr Roosevelt Skerrit, also urged the people to remain cautious and prepared for the season. During his address at the beginning of the hurricane season, he enlisted several steps people can take to protect themselves.

He urged the people of the country to implement these preventive measures. At the same time, he asserted that his government is working diligently to protecting the people.
