Dominica: PM Skerrit attends launch event of Build Back Equal Project

The Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica, Dr Roosevelt Skerrit attended the launch ceremony of the ‘Build Back Equal’ Project. The event took place on Monday, June 5, 2023.

The Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica, Dr Roosevelt Skerrit attended the launch ceremony of the ‘Build Back Equal’ Project. The event took place on Monday, June 5, 2023. The Ministry of Health Wellness and Social Services has entered a partnership with the United Nations Women and the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) for the event. Accordingly, Prime Minister Dr Skerrit shared glimpses from the event on his social media account. 

The Prime Minister also shared that Global Affairs Canada has funded the project implementation in Dominica, Grenada, Saint Lucia, St Vincent, and the Grenadines. The Build back equal project will run for four years. The collaborative effort will increase women’s economic resilience in the Eastern Caribbean. The initiative will address the barriers women face regarding economic empowerment.

The initiative will also work to provide more sustainable opportunities for growth and independence. ‘Build Back Equal’ focuses on women empowerment in the Caribbean sister islands Dominica, Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The initiative will employ a comprehensive approach to address the issues faced by women in their economic empowerment. The endeavour will also support the government and private sectors.  

Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit stated that the objectives of the initiative include:

  • Enhancement of economic opportunities for women
  • development of laws and policies 
  • Providing access to gender-responsive social protection
  • Reproductive Health Services

Tina Alexander, the executive director of Lifeline Ministries Inc, was also present during the launch event. She stated that she was pleased to be a part of the proceedings of the launch event. During her attendance at the event in Dominica, she shared her experience while getting training in Jamaica and Dubai. She shared that the authorities curated the activities towards economic empowerment and advancements of women. 

Alexander stated that the UN Women’s Caribbean sponsored the training. Meanwhile, Through the initiative, the women became familiar with the necessary tools for success. The UN Women in the Caribbean also shared the update and glimpses from the event on their social media accounts.
