Nigeria: Kwara court justice imprisons internet fraudster, forfeits Mercedez Benz of N13 million

The court also asked Olukayode to forfeit a 350 Mercedes Benz, which cost around N13 million, to the Federal Government.

The Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission charged the 26-year-old Ondo State citizen with offences regarding the cybercrime.

Wilson Uwajuaren, the Head of Media and Publicity of EFCC, in a statement, on Thursday, June 30, stated the accused was among the 30 suspected Internet fraudsters captured in Ado-Ekiti on April 26, 2022, in a sting operation after intelligence reports reported of activities of fraudsters in the area.

The statement further stated that the investigation into the matter disclosed that Olukayode, who presently has no defined job, specialised in Internet fraud as well as had profited many millions of naira through his fraudulent activities, part of which he used to buy a Mercedes Benz ML 350 in the amount of N13 million.

Olukayode asserted guilty to the charge. After following his guilty plea, Sesan Ola, counsel for the EFCC, rechecked the facts of the case.

He further tendered the extra-judicial statements of the defendant, HP laptop, phones and the car received from him at the point of his arrest, as well as deceitful messages obtained from his devices, which were admitted as evidence.

In his judgement, Justice Sani stated he saw merit in the case of the prosecution and accordingly convicted him.

The judge charged Olukayode with one year of imprisonment, each on counts one and two, with a fine penalty of N300,000.

The court has also asked for the forfeiture of the iPhone 12, HP laptop, Infinix X65 and Mercedes Benz that were recovered from the convict.
