The Nasarawa State Police Command has captured about six individuals from Masaka, Karu LGA, for carrying out internet fraud with the help of an intelligence report.
A statement issued by Ramhan Nansel, the Police Public Relations Officer, revealed that the suspects, via an online gay dating app, attracted unsuspecting victims to their hideout place in the state.
As per the statement, public members are required to be careful of their safety before pleasure.
On July 31, around 7:20 am, while acting as per credible information, Police officials linked to Masaka Division in a sting operation intruded the hideout of some internet criminals and arrested the following suspects – Luka Musa, Sunday Michael, Elijah Ishaya, Joy Sunday, Abdulrahman Tijani and Agada Sandra.
Initial investigations disclosed that the suspects criminally plotted among themselves and used a famous gay dating application where they arranged dates with unsuspecting members of the public from various parts of the nation, attracted them to their hideout and held them hostage after disposing them of their belongings while intimidating them with various weapons.
Moreover, they assaulted the victims to reveal their ATM pin, and then their bank accounts were wiped out before they were released.
Therefore, the amount of One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira (N150,000), which they gathered from one of their victim who came from Imo State on July 30, was recovered from the suspects as an exhibit.
The suspects admitted their crime to have so far attracted eight victims through the same mode of operation and have made around One Million, Three Hundred and Sixty Thousand Naira from the victims at various times.
The statement revealed that CP Adesina Soyemi, the Commissioner of Police, has asked for the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Lafia, for further investigation, after which suspects will be charged to court for prosecution.
Soyemi asked the public to be careful of the people they meet online, highlighting that safety is of high importance before pleasure.
