The Guwahati Press Club has elected their first female president in the person of Sushmita Goswami. The press club made her appointment along with the new executive body on June 4, 2023. Meanwhile, They held the elections for the various positions on Saturday, June 3. As per the results of the polls, Sanjoy Roy retained the position of the General Secretary for the second tenure.
Other members of the executive body include:
- Jatin Bhagawati (Vice President)
- Aloka Boruah (Vice President reserved for women)
- Dilwae Hussain Mozumder (Assistant General Secretary)
- Kishore Jyoti Sarma (Organizing Secretary)
Further, the elections appointed Pallabi Bora, Azad Gogoi and Manindra Deka as Cultural Secretary, Sports Secretary and Treasurer respectively. The newly appointed president of the press club spoke to the media following her new appointment. The committee of the GBC is completely new. She claimed that they have alot to do with respect to the proceedings of the book club.
The president stated that she hopes to achieve the majority of these goals during the next two years. She claimed that they need to find way to increase memberships for the press club. Additionally, The president stated that they will need to revive the membership rule and find a way to include new people. She also added that including dynamic new members to the press club.
Sushmita Goswami is the first female president of the Guwahati Press Club. However, she believes that being male or female is just a gender. It doesn’t matter. The aim of the new committee will be to work towards creating a vibrant press club. The committee in question consist of four women. She expressed her hope that they would inspire more women and girls to come forward and join journalism.
The new committee will also work on introducing a health insurance policy for the journalists and their families. The president of the press club stated that the inclusion of the health insurance policy is a priority.
