The militancy attacks in Pakistan witnessed a record high in February 2023. The statistics released by Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) suggest that this is the first time since June 2015 that the country has witnessed such a surge in militant activity.
The various regions of Pakistan witnessed 58 militant attacks during February. The said attacks resulted in the death of 62 people were killed. Of the 62 deaths, 27 were civilians, 18 were security forces personnel, and 17 were militants. Meanwhile, the attacks resulted in 134 people getting injured. Of these, 54 were civilians, and 80 were security personnel.
Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan took responsibility for an attack carried out at the Karachi Police Headquarters, considered the most significant and high-profile incident of militant violence in the country. The nation is seeing an upward surge in anti-state violence in February. Statistically, authorities recorded 32% more attacks when compared to the period in January 2023. However, the number of deaths resulting from such incidents recorded a decline of 56%
The intensity of suicide attacks also increased in February. However, the impact of these incidents was not as devastating as the previous month. Elaborating on the same, the authorities publicized the statistics of comparison. While two attacks in January 2023 killed 106 people and injured 216, three militant attacks in February killed nine people and resulted in injury for thirty-seven.
The sources have revealed that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region of Pakistan has witnessed a decline in incidents of violence. However, the tribal areas of the region continue to show a rise in the number of militant attacks.
Meanwhile, Balochistan also sees a rise in incidents along with the sindh and Punjab areas. To combat the situation, the law agencies of Pakistan have stepped up to arrest and neutralize the militants. So far, the authorities have successfully at least 55 suspected militants in addition to arresting at least 75 suspected militants from all over the nation.
