A bus full of passengers collided with another vehicle and burst into flames; following the collision, the bus caught on fire, burning the passengers travelling inside beyond any scope of recognition.
More than 20 bus passengers were burnt beyond all recognition following the accident. Only two badly burned people survived the horrible accident which happened at Lanlate in the Ibarapa area of Oyo state on Friday, the latest road crash in the vast west African nation.
The chairman of Ibarapa district, Gbenga Obalowo, commented on the unfortunate accident, stating “It was a fatal accident. We counted over 20 human bodies burnt completely,”
He explained, “They had a head-on collision and the two vehicles which were both conveying passengers caught fire and got burnt beyond repair,”
He said there were only two people “with severe burns” who managed to survive the crash and were promptly taken to the hospital.
A senior police officer in the state confirmed the crash, stating that “20 people lost their lives in the accident,”
He did not give any further details of the same.
Obalowo blamed the accident on speeding and reckless driving.
Road accidents are prevalent in parts of Nigeria, mainly owing to reckless driving, speeding and a significant disregard for traffic rules and laws of road safety. Additionally, the roads and infrastructure of the roads in Nigeria are poorly managed, thus exposing the commuters to several risks, in transit, including terrible road accidents such as the one being discussed.
A few weeks ago, in July, 30 people were burnt to death after three vehicles collided on a highway in northwest Nigeria’s Kaduna state.
According to statistics made public by the road safety commission, In the year 2021, Nigeria recorded a total of 10,637 road accidents which claimed 5,101 lives and injured more than 30,000 people.
