The Ogun State Police Command has detained six suspected Eiye cult members after an apparent attempt to murder a traditional leader in his palace. The suspects were identified as Michael Ayodele, Monday Samuel; Ademola Matthew; Hammed Jelili, Ogundele Ojeh and Sunkanmi Fadina. They were arrested on Sunday, September 11, 2022.

According to information collected from the resources, the suspects were imprisoned in response to a distress call that Oba G.O. Olukunle, the Oba of Gbokoto land, placed at the Oja Odan Divisional Headquarters at around 4:25 p.m. He informed that he was about to get killed in his palace by some cultists.

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Oja-Odan division quickly mobilised his men and grabbed their equipment in response to the distress call, and rushed to the palace, where they encountered the hoodlums who were continuously shooting inside the castle.

Six cultists were captured when the police officers engaged them in a gunfight. It was heard that some of them also got killed during the encounter. The individuals arrested during the incident admitted their relations to the infamous Eiye confraternity during questioning.

The cultists reported to the Police while interrogating that Oba’s son planned this whole incident and wanted to take revenge for the unresolved issue Oba had with his mother. He invited them to come and kill his father.

The Police collected one locally built double barrel pistol, two live ammunition, and one used cartridge from the crime spot. However, the son of the Oba succeeded in escaping with another gun from the group.

Lanre Bankole, The state’s Commissioner of Police (CP), has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspects to State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) for a deep investigation to charge them to court on the conclusion.

In order to capture the fugitive son of the Oba, the CP also issued an order for an intensive search.
