Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, a controversial Islamic cleric, expressed that Nigeria needs an experienced politician to succeed the incumbent President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), as his tenure ends in 2023. He made this observation on Monday

Gumi remarked that Nigerians must do away with ethnoreligious politics in the 21st century and focus their efforts on building a united country.

He spoke to journalists in Kaduna, where he argued that the next President should be one with experience.

The Islamic cleric then assessed the three leading presidential candidates ready to contest the elections in the following year. The presidential candidates are Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party; Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, and Peter Obi of the Labour Party. The fiery cleric stated that Nigeria does not need a newcomer as their President but an experienced politician.

While assessing Atiku for the 2023 presidency, Gumi argued that even though Atiku is the former Vice President and might have contested several times, “Nigeria needs an experienced politician. We don’t need a novice to be President.” He stated that we need the guidance of an experienced politician to get Nigeria out of the situation that they have found themselves in.

Further, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi assessed the second presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu. While talking about Tinubu, he said, “It is not proper for him to say it is his turn. There is no question of saying it is my turn. Don’t say it is my turn because if people like you, they will vote for you. He is a good administrator. He can do it.”

On Obi, the cleric said, “Youths following him are divided like the adults. He needs to reach out to other segments of Nigerians. Relying on youths is not enough. He has to be all over the place and not leaving politics to one region.”

Gumi also noted that Nigeria has gone beyond talking about North or South, adding that in America, “nobody is talking about power rotation.”
