A man identified as Ponle Adebanjo is reported to have burnt his estranged wife, Lateefat, because she left him due to domestic violence in Abule Oturi, Akute, Ogun State of Nigeria.
The happening became viral on social media after someone narrated the incident on his Twitter account.
His tweet stated that at Ajuwon Police Station, his wife got separated from her abusive husband, and a few months later, the husband went to her new residence, doused her with petrol and set her on fire.
“Burning wife holds husband while she burns. Both with serious burn injuries require urgent medical care.”
While confirming the news, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the state Police Public Relations Officer, stated that the suspect was captured on Saturday after his wife’s neighbours reported the incident at the police station in the Otun-Akute division.
The estranged husband, Ponle, was said to have told several people in the area that his wife had no right to live without him and pledged that no other man would stay with her in future after she left him over physical abuse.
The couple was married for three years in lived in Otun-Akute, till the wife, Lateefat, decided to leave her husband when she could not bear any more abuse.
Ponle also went to the wife’s new apartment to warn her to kill her if she did not return. The neighbours also told that the man used to beat her on multiple occasions, and she was also admitted to the hospital several times due to severe injuries that her husband had given him.
On July 2, Ponle went to her apartment and set her on fire, but the woman somehow managed to grab him, and they burned together till the neighbours came and took them out.
Both were immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where the woman was confirmed dead while the man was handed over to the police but later died.
