Nigerian YouTuber, filmmaker and storyteller Tayo Aina has ventured into a new adventure in 2023. He recently shared a Youtube video where he travelled to the Benin Republic. The country is one of the neighbours of Nigeria. Reportedly, the nation is home to Africa’s most Mysterious religion, Voodo. One of the most interesting features of Voodoo is the Floating spirit. The “voodoo religion” and the “Floating spirit” caught the attention of the Youtuber, who immediately ventured on an investigation.
Accordingly, Aina gave himself a time limit of 2 days (or 48 hours) to find the truth of the floating spirit of the Voodoo. Meanwhile, to further the investigation, he arrived at Cotonou, a large port city on the south coast of the Benin Republic. For the first day, Tayo Aina and his team searched the city streets for clues.
During the exploration, they came across a poster which featured details of a Vodun Festival. The Voodoo festival was happening in Ouidah. The festival attracted the attention of Voodoo fans and worshippers from across the globe. The Vodun festival featured several priests and practitioners of the religion. One of the priestesses also talked to the YouTuber. She told him about the religion’s history, noting that many of the Voodoo deities in Ouidah come from Nigeria.
Tayo Aina noted that over thirty-million people across West Africa, including Nigeria, Ghana, Benin Republic, and other countries, practice Voodoo. He also pointed out that this is one of the most misunderstood religions. The vodun festival made the YouTuber more curious, so he visited the temple of Pythons in Ouidah. In this temple, the devotees worship snakes as deities. After visiting the python temple, the YouTuber took the initiative to explore religion further.
He interviewed several followers of the Voodoo religion. During his interviews, he asked them what drew them to the faith and what significance the deities hold in their lives. Surprisingly, one of the practices of Voodoo confessed that before associating completely with the faith, she believed it was evil. However, after she got “called in”, she realized that Voodoo could help her and the people around her.
