Maiduguri – A devastating suicide attack in Kawuri village, Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State, has resulted in the death of at least 19 civilians and left dozens injured.
The incident occurred around 8 p.m. local time at a mini market, as reported by sources familiar with the situation.
Kawuri, located approximately 50 kilometers from Maiduguri on the Maiduguri-Konduga-Bama Road, has been rocked by violence in recent months.
The latest attack comes just 24 hours after a separate incident where Shettima Mustapha, an accountant with the Local Education Authority in Damboa Local Government Area, lost his life.
Mustapha’s vehicle struck an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on the Maiduguri-Damboa-Biu federal highway, resulting in injuries to others traveling with him.
The violence in the region has been escalating. About a month ago, multiple suicide bombings in Gwoza Local Government Area claimed 32 lives and injured over 100 people.
The pattern of attacks underscores the ongoing instability in Borno State, with security agencies struggling to contain the situation.
In a related development, last week saw an attack on a police station in the Jakana community of Konduga.
The terrorists targeted the station, killing a police driver and his alleged girlfriend, setting ablaze two security patrol vehicles, and stealing motorcycles, arms, and ammunition.
The most recent attack in Kawuri has left the community in turmoil. Eyewitnesses reported that the bomb blasts occurred at a busy market area, leading to a chaotic scene as residents fled for safety.
The injured individuals have been transported to a hospital in Maiduguri for treatment, though specific details about their conditions remain unclear.
Efforts to confirm details with the Police Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Daso, were unsuccessful. However, a stakeholder in Kawuri, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the attack and called for immediate action from the government and security forces.
“The community is in a state of panic and despair,” the source said. “We urgently need the authorities to address the increasing frequency of these insurgent attacks.”
The series of attacks in Borno State highlights the ongoing security challenges facing the region.
With recent incidents pointing to a disturbing trend of escalating violence, there is growing concern among residents and officials about the effectiveness of current security measures.
