Lagos, Nigeria: Police officers from the Ikorodu Area Command in Lagos State saved the life of a 19-year-old pregnant girl who was contemplating suicide.
The young woman, who remains unnamed for privacy reasons, had reached a desperate point in her life after being abandoned by her boyfriend, who denied responsibility for her pregnancy.
The harrowing ordeal began when the girl, eight months pregnant, confided in a close friend about her overwhelming despair.
She had been working as a Point of Sale (POS) operator in Ikorodu when she fell victim to a scam, losing N100,000 to a customer who used a fake alert to deceive her.
Threatened by her employer with legal action over the lost funds and with no support from her boyfriend or family, she felt utterly alone and without hope.
Upon receiving information about her suicidal intentions, Mr. Musendique Orobiyi, the Area Commander of Ikorodu, swiftly mobilized a team of female detectives.
Their mission was to locate the distraught young woman and prevent the tragedy from unfolding. They traced her to Iyana-Iyesi in Ogun State just as she was preparing to ingest a lethal dose of sniper, a deadly insecticide.
The timely intervention of the police officers ensured that the girl was rescued unharmed. They provided immediate care, including food and a change of clothes, at the Ikorodu Area Command before transferring her to the gender unit at the Lagos State Police Command headquarters in Ikeja.
There, she received further assistance and counseling. In an emotional phone interview with Vanguard, the victim shared her anguish, describing her spiraling difficulties since discovering her pregnancy.
“My trouble started after I got pregnant for my boyfriend, who subsequently denied the pregnancy and abandoned me,” she recounted.
“I haven’t received any prenatal care and don’t even know the gender of my baby because I cannot afford to visit a clinic. Life has been incredibly hard, and I feel completely alone with no family support.”
Her story highlights the vulnerabilities faced by young women in challenging circumstances, often exacerbated by abandonment and financial strain.
The police’s rapid response and compassionate handling of the situation underscored their commitment to protecting and supporting vulnerable members of the community.
As investigations into the fraud and the circumstances leading to her despair continue, authorities are ensuring that the pregnant teenager receives the necessary medical attention and social support she urgently needs.
The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of timely intervention and support systems for individuals facing mental health crises, particularly among vulnerable populations.
