Officers of the Ogun State Police Command have captured a 53-year-old woman, identified as Chinyere Nwosu, in the Ogun State of Nigeria for the theft of a seven-day-old male child.
As per the Police Command, the suspect was arrested on Monday, July 25, 2022, around 9 in the morning.
According to Abimbola Oyeyemi, the command spokesperson, the arrest was carried out when she was noticed with a little baby who was continuously crying, but she was unable to breastfeed him as a mother.
This caused the suspicion of some members of the public who were around her at that time and immediately informed the police officials at Sango Ota divisional headquarters.
Upon receiving the information, SP Dahiru Saleh, the DPO Sango Ota, rushed his detectives to the scene from where the woman was immediately arrested.
During the interrogation, she admitted in front of the police that she was not the biological mother of the infant but that she purchased the child from somewhere in the Agege area of Lagos State via one Ngozu Akaeme for the worth of N500,000.
After her confession, the police officials traced and located Ngozi Akaeme and got her arrested.
Akaeme confessed to being an accomplice to Chinyere Nwozu (the suspect who bought the child) and that she negotiated with the biological mother of the infant. The latter, as per her, agreed to sell her baby.
Several efforts to make her accompany police officers to find the birth mother of the baby proved to be abortive.
Oyeyemi said that Lanre Bankole, the Commissioner of Police, has directed that the suspects should be transferred to State Criminal Investigation Departments for further probe and possible prosecution.
Investigation to locate the birth parents of the male child still continues while the baby is in the care of police officials.
