During the annual World Menstrual Health and Hygiene Day, some agencies and departments of Nigerian government have launched what they described as a pad bank for female workers.
As per the country’s minister of women’s affairs, Pauline Tallen, the initiative is to serve for emergencies while females are at work. Mrs Tallen revealed this on Tuesday, 24 May, during a meeting with the media, students as well as other stakeholders in Abuja, Nigeria’s federal capital territory.
Mrs Tallen stated that the gesture strived to create more awareness about menstrual hygiene that is in line with the topic of the yearly celebration.
The theme of this year is “Making Menstruation a Normal fact of life by the year 2030.”
She further stated, “As the coordinating ministry and the National Secretariat for Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management, we have also made tremendous progress in managing menstrual health and hygiene in Nigeria.”
As per her, the MDAs include water resources, ministries of foreign affairs, agriculture and rural development, interior, youth and sports development and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), among many others.
Therefore, the minister motivated others, particularly those in the private sector, to copy the gesture for the convenience and well to be of young girls and women.
She stressed that if everyone tries to strengthen this collaboration, existing structures to thwart violence against children to ensure a brighter future for our nation will be sustained.
The Deputy Country Representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) motivated the people to see menstrual hygiene as necessary for women and young girls.
On the matter of obstetrics fistula, Ms Godson called on appropriate stakeholders to enhance the quality of services in the healthcare system.
“We promote our healthcare system to enhance the quality of services so that women can deliver babies safely and not be left with the issue of obstetrics fistula.”
