The apple crop of Jammu and Kashmir is a major contributor to the state economy. Accordingly, the local producers of apples in the country have been demanding safeguards to protect their interests in the economy of the country. The farmers have accordingly applauded the steps taken by the government of India in this regard.

Kashmir produced about 1.9 million metric tons of apples in the year 2019. However, despite recording a high number in terms of production, the farmers are facing several issues. According to sources, They are facing competition from the tax free imports of apples from several other nations. The local apple growers of the country have to incur several additional expenses. These expenses include transportation, storage and other facilities.

Additionally, The tax free imports of the country led to decreased profits of the country’s local producers. Accordingly, the central government of India has introduced the Minimum import price. The initiative aims to discourage the imports of apples from foreign nations. In turn, it will protect the needs of the people.

The MIP will allow the local farmers to get better prices for their crop. It will boost the morale of the people and reduce the oversupply of cheap apples from the markets. This will level the business ground for the local and international competition.
