Five people died in an accident on Saturday, 25 June, while three others got severely injured in the Ogun State of Nigeria.

The accident involved a crash between a Mazda car and a Howo Sino truck at Day Waterman junction on the Abeokuta-Sagamu expressway.

The Spokesperson of the Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the incident.

Akinbiyi said that the incident took place around 3:45 pm at Day Waterman turning on the expressway located in the Obafemi Owode Local Government area of Ogun.

The spokesperson of the TRACE alleged that the accident took place due to reckless driving by the driver of the truck with registration number T-14214LA.

He stated that the truck driver made a risky U-turn without looking at the sides, further adding that the Mazda car with registration number KRD 975 HJ collided with it because of its speed.

He disclosed that nine people, including four men and five women, were involved in the incident, adding that five people died while three others got injuries.

He said, “Unfortunately, the motorist of the Howo truck who caused the collision ran away.”

Akinbiyi said that the injured people were immediately taken to State Hospital, Ijaiye, Abeokuta and Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, for their treatment.

He also said that the bodies of the deceased people were sent to State Hospital, Ijaye morgue and Idera Hospital morgue, Sagamu.

The spokesperson of TRACE gave his condolences to the families of the deceased, urging to articulated vehicle drivers to follow safety rules and avoid overbearing attitudes while driving.

The Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun, Ahmed Umar, also confirmed the accident and gave his sincere condolences to the families of the victims.

An investigation is also being carried out to trace the location of the truck driver.
