The Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has captured more than 130 suspects in offences related to drugs in Enugu during the last eleven months.
Anietie Bassey, the commander of the state, stated that those arrested during July 2021 and May 2022 consisted of 6 females and 124 males.
Bassey was speaking on the sidelines during the 2022 UN International Day against Drug Abuse as well as Illicit Drug Trafficking.
He stated that the agency confirmed 97 convictions in the same period and other suspects are under trial.
The drugs that were found with these people were 957.58grams of methamphetamine, 845,839kg of Indian hemp, 5.469 kilograms of psychotropic substances and 90.2 grams of cocaine.
The commander stated that around 36 drug users were rehabilitated and reunited with their families while they were under the review period, and another 18 are still going under rehab procedures.
He further stated that these achievements are worth praising and are significant improvements on the records of the last corresponding period, and the success was got via the commitment of the Federal Government.
Bassey restated the commitment of NDLEA to get rid of the illicit drug dealers from the Enugu State.
Additionally, he said that, but for the continued raid at some flashpoints in Enugu, the capital city would have been plagued by illegal drug dealers.
He highlighted that the Ogidi Street and its surroundings along the Ogui Road as one of the most infamous hideouts of these illegal drug dealers in the Enugu State of Nigeria.
Bassey said that Indian hemp was the most trafficked drug in Enugu State.
He asked the citizens of the state to give valuable information regarding this situation that would allow the agency to successfully eliminate the drug dealers from the state while adding that such information would remain confidential.
