More than 3000 students were dismissed from school on Monday, 27 June, due to banditry in the Jinia Local Government Area (LGA) communities of Katsina State, Nigeria.
Malam Sa’ad Salihu, the Chairman of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp, revealed this on Monday.
The IDP Chairman, also the head of Shimfida Youth Development Association, said that the students were in school when the local gunmen, known as bandits, attacked while leaving the members of the communities hustling.
Salihu said that over 15000 IDPs were in the camp, many of whom came from Zango, Kwari, Shimfida, Tsauni, Zango, and Far at the time of attack Faru, Tsanme and Gurbin Magariya communities.
The chairman has expressed her displeasure with the state of the education sector because of the large number of children sacked from school due to bandit activities.
Around 23 women and children lost their lives at the camp in four months due to depression or hypertension, while 35 women gave birth.
More than 3000 children who are presently in the camp couldn’t have access to education.
From the Shimfida community, there are 8000 people in the camp, while from the Far Faru community, there are over 7000 and around 200 from the Zango community.
Some of the IDPs are there in some parts of the Niger Republic; nearly 20,000 people were sacked out of their communities by the bandits.
He added that the IDP had lost access to their farms, which had been captured by the bandits, while urging the government to restore security for these communities so they could return to their routine lives.
In response to these questions, the Chairman, Jibia LGA, Alhaji Bishir Sabi’u, confirmed that the students were clearly dismissed from schools in a few communities in the LGA.
Sabi’u stated that apart from the foodstuff given by the government, the council spends N200,000 on providing the IDPs weekly.
