The State Safety Commission of Lagos has advised teachers in the state to educate students, staff and visitors on safety while making sure they are safe inside school premises.
Dr Lanre Mojola, Director-General of the commission, while speaking during the 6th annual edition of the School Safety Summit, with the topic, ‘Child safety importance of a systematic safety education,’ held in Lagos, highlighted the significance of safety and the requirement to be creative in its approach.
“Teaching safely and teaching safety needs to go hand in hand.”
Dr Lanre further said that the primary aim of safety education is to provide necessary precautions and warnings to prevent possible accidents.
Safety education is a set of instructions and warnings that gives awareness regarding possible harms and injuries to minimise injuries and their deadly consequences, told Mojola.
Dr Bisi Esuruoso, Project Lead for Safe School, Lagos, also spoke during the Summit and gave the ‘lack of guidance’ as the primary cause behind many injured, motivating parents to monitor schools too.
The Lagos State Commission is doing its best to choose genuine people for recruitment and regulate those who stay around children, said Dr Bisi.
He further added, “Parents are also required to police the school themselves as they are the ones who pay fees for their children, so they must monitor too.”
An Education consultant, Rotimi Eyitayo, said, People need to recognise that a school that is not safe and secure is not a school, schools always make profits from parents, and parents also benefit from schools, so the safety and protection of every child are necessary.
Eyitayo further stated that it is essential for every school to adopt safety in its teaching.
“The summit is an avenue where teachers and parents are brought together to talk about matters on safety as concerns children,” Fisayo Ajala, Chief Executive Officer, Safety Chic, stated.
