Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, Governor of the Kaduna State of Nigeria, has warned to sack all academic staff at the Kaduna State University (KASU) if they did not go back to classrooms.
The Governor stated this in a live media chat held in Kaduna on Wednesday, July 27.
He promised to announce positions of teaching staff vacant if he found that they were still on strike.
As per the Governor, “Kaduna State Governor doesn’t have any industrial dispute with the KASU.”
The ASUU (Academic Staff Union of Universities) has been on strike since February 24, 2022, blaming the Nigerian government for failing to honour the 2009 MoU (memorandum of understanding) it signed.
Well-known individuals and groups, including the NLC (Nigeria Labor Congress have urged the FC (Federal Government) to bring an end to such a prolonged strike to allow students to go back to their classes.
On Tuesday, July 26, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and a few other affiliate groups led a nationwide peaceful protest to push the Federal government to end the industrial strike.
Congress has issued a two-week ultimatum for the strike, stating that it would initiate on a total, indefinite strike if the issue is not resolved.
On the other hand, many trade unions have joined the Osun Council of the NLC (Nigeria Labour Congress) solidarity protest against the ASUU (Academic Staff Union of Universities) strike in the Osun State of Nigeria.
The trade unions, including the Trade Union Congress (TUC), the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) and among others, on Tuesday, July 26 joined the national body in protest against the strike and other problems in the education sector of the nation.
