The citizens and residents of the Kaduna State of Nigeria have expressed concern over the federal government’s proposal to ban motorcycles in all 36 states as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, had told the State House Correspondents after the meeting of the Federal Executive Council in Abuja on Tuesday, July 26, that the government was taking under consideration the proposal of banning motorcycles in a measure to tackle crime in Nigeria.

A few residents in Kaduna State who spoke about the issue stated that banning motorcycles would push youth venturing into crime.

The Chairman of the Kaduna Motorcycles Riders Association, Alhaji Musa Yakodo, said that 70% of unemployed youth are mostly motorcycle riders and are into it to survive.

He added that they eat their meals and marry with the bit of saving they do from riding motorcycles. Some of them also look over their parents and pay the bills and school fees of their younger ones.

Mose Musa Yaro, the Secretary of the Association, stated that he thinks the federal government is playing with the lives of unemployed people in the nation.

Yaro highlighted that unemployed graduates ride motorcycles to feed themselves and their families and buy necessities.

He also suggested that the government provide motorcycle riders with a means of livelihood before implementing a ban.

Additionally, a graduate of Mechanical Engineering from the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Samuel Oyifie, stated that with the motorcycle, he started a degree program at ABU.

He sponsored himself with the bike, and now that he has yet to get work, he uses it to feed himself. If the ban is executed, what will be the next step? It means he will have to stay idle, he added.

He said the proposed ban couldn’t prevent bandits from attacking the country’s people.
