Basseterre, St Kitts and Nevis: The First Lady Diani Prince Drew joined the Menstrual Hygiene Initiative, which was spearheaded by First Lady Arya Ali of Guyana to promote menstrual hygiene. The project aims to eradicate period poverty in the region.
The initiative was held on Monday at the Umana Yana in Kingston, Georgetown, and Guyana on the sidelines of the 46th Regular Meeting of the CARICOM Heads. The agenda of this project is to ensure that females should have access to essential menstrual hygiene products.
The First Lady of St Kitts and Nevis was accompanied by other First Ladies of the Caribbean countries, such as First Lady Eloise Gonsalves of St Vincent and the Grenadines and Ann Marie Davis of the Bahamas.
During the meeting, First Lady Ali touched on several topics of concern regarding menstruation, including the lack of hygienic products in the region. Due to this, many girls in the Caribbean region are not using menstruation products, which impacts their confidence and social status.
It is to be noted that the initiative was undertaken by the First Lady of Guyana in September 2021. The initiative outlines the importance of dignity and inclusivity.
As First Lady Prince, Drew is known for her dedication to social justice, arts, and women’s empowerment. She pledges to support non-governmental organizations in her country, which will enhance the overall development of the nation.
The Prime Minister of SKN, Dr Terrance Drew, expressed his delight in this initiative as this idea will help girls from every sector stay safe during their periods and have access to all the menstruation products.
“My beautiful wife, First Lady Diani Prince- Drew, along with First Ladies Eloise Gonsalves of St Vincent and the Grenadines and Ann Marie Davis of the Bahamas, were honoured guests at the Menstrual Hygiene Initiative spearheaded by First Lady Arya Ali of Guyana.
