Principal Secretary of the State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni, met with officials from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC). The meeting took place on Friday, June 16, 2023. During the session, they discussed crucial matters about preventing and controlling public health emergencies.
The Ministry of Health shared some glimpses from the event on its official social media account. Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni hosted the meeting to discuss various significant issues.
The meeting focused on the operationalization of the East Africa Regional Collaboration Centre. They also discussed the progress of establishing the Kenya National Public Health Institute. Additionally, they talked about establishing a regional Emergency Operations Centre for the Africa CDC.
Kenya is the host country for the Eastern Africa Regional Collaboration Centre. Accordingly, the nation is also preparing to host the Regional Emergency Operations Centre. The country enjoys a strategic geopolitical position, which makes them ideal for hosting the event. This decision reflects the country’s role in facilitating effective regional coordination during public health emergencies.
During the meeting, the participants highlighted the importance of ensuring the security of vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutics for effective health service delivery. Further, they acknowledged and expressed appreciation for the proposal made by President William Ruto. It is worth mentioning that President has a nomination as the Africa Champion for local Health Products and Technologies (HPTs) manufacturing.
This proposal signifies the country’s commitment to strengthening the local production of essential health products and technologies. In addition to these discussions, Kenya is preparing to host the regional ministerial steering committee meeting and the 5th African Union Mid-Year Summit this year.
