Abuja, August 15, 2024—The inaugural edition of the Nigeria Youth League Cup (NYLC) is set to feature not fewer than 30 youth teams, according to an announcement made by Robinson Adakosa, the president of the NYLC, at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday.
Adakosa revealed that the NYLC has garnered substantial support from key footballing authorities, including the Sports Ministry, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), and the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
Additionally, endorsements have come from the Nigeria National League, the FCT Football Association, and various other stakeholders.
Describing the NYLC as a major youth development initiative, Adakosa emphasized its mission to provide a world-class football experience and competitive environment for teenagers and young adults aged 16 to 19.
“This league is designed to be a platform where young talents can showcase their skills and grow in a structured and supportive setting,” Adakosa stated.
Founded in 2023, the NYLC is poised to become the fastest-growing youth league in Africa, with ambitious plans to expand its reach.
Adakosa projected that the league will soon encompass over one million members, including participants and supporters, across all 36 states of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
“Our cardinal objectives are to create opportunities for young people to engage in team sports, benefiting from the discipline, teamwork, and camaraderie that come with it,” he added. The league aims to foster a safe environment where young athletes can thrive both on and off the field.
Ayo Abdulrahman, Chief Operating Officer of the Nigeria National League, spoke on behalf of NFF President Ibrahim Gusau. Abdulrahman urged participants to uphold the values of the sport, emphasizing the importance of discipline and sportsmanship.
“Players should strive to be exemplary ambassadors of football,” Abdulrahman advised. “Maintaining discipline in their conduct and performance is essential for achieving their goals and representing their teams and the league with honor.”
The NYLC’s inaugural season is anticipated to attract significant attention, with its focus on youth development aligning with broader objectives to strengthen grassroots football in Nigeria.
