The National Union of Electricity Employees, commonly known as NUEE, has suspended its nationwide strike for around two weeks.
Joe Ajaero, the secretary-general of the union, disclosed this on Wednesday evening, August 17, after a meeting with Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour.
He stated that the government of Nigeria has promised to solve the issues which are raised by the union within the next two weeks. He said that if their demands are not fulfilled, then the strike will resume.
A committee led by Jeddy Agba, the Minister of State for Power, has been formed to negotiate the issues that have been raised by the union.
The parties agreed to create a bipartite committee to look into the matters and complaints of the electricity workers and report back in around two weeks, said Ajaero.
Ajaero stated that power would be restored around the country. The strike of the union on Wednesday, August 17, had left cities and towns around the country in darkness after workers shut down power stations. Moreover, the workers are also complaining about welfare problems.
Several hours after the meeting in which, an agreement to suspend the ongoing strike was taken into consideration, but the electricity outage persisted in a few parts of Abuja.
Nigeria has been struggling with poor electricity for several years. The government on Wednesday stated that it could not increase power generation to 5,000 megawatts as it vowed in July because of gas supply issues.
Nigerian country has always been tackling the issue of electricity, and with the strike by the National Union of Electricity Employees, it became a serious concern for the government, which the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration needs to solve at the earliest.
