President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has asked doctors and other health professionals to develop practicable solutions for various challenges being faced by Nigeria’s health care system.
On Friday, 20 May, the President made the call during the opening ceremony of the 62nd Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), which took place in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
President Buhari, represented by Dr Olorunnimbe Mamora, the Minister of State for Health, has expressed his concerns over the vulnerability of the health care system of the country while explaining steps taken by his administration to assure improvement in primary health care in Nigeria.
He stated, “I hope that this meeting will bring to light more viable solutions for enhancing the health care system in Nigeria, and you will justify the trust reposed in you in this consideration as top grade health professionals.”
The President highlighted that the health of the population of any nation depends on the structure of the health system, further adding that it determines the effectiveness and spread of the health intervention and the quality and availability of the health officials.
He also said that the topic of the conference, ‘Current Emergencies in Building a Resilient Health System for Nigeria: Situation Analysis and Solutions’, was not only appropriate but also speaks for the importance of his administration regarding the issues of health and the overall development of the country at this time.
President Mohammadu Buhari also blamed the existing problems in the health system on the poor system of governance and coordination, stating that “poor and dilapidated health facilities, lack of human resources and poor funding stay clogs in the wheel of efficient implementation.”
He further revealed that the issues were being handled in a very planned and systematic manner through which these issues could be resolved as soon as possible.
