Kayode Ajiboye, a professional journalist of Nigeria working under the Independent Newspaper, might soon be fired after posting an unverified report about a lady sleeping with a dog.
The journalist posted a report with the title ‘Girl captured in a viral sex video with dog dies of infection’ on May 10 Tuesday, in the same newspaper he is working.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Command has regarded the report as fake news after several efforts to confirm the authenticity of the information had no headway.
The statement signed by SP Benjamin Hundeyin, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, after several efforts to contact the author for further research on the article he published, came out to be negative, Kayode Ajiboye is also suspected to be in cahoot with the accused to help her avoid justice which is also a criminal offence.
The Police statement read, “The focus of the Lagos State Police Command has been drawn towards a publication with the above caption published on May 10, 2022, and credited to one Kayode Ajiboye of Independent Newspapers.”
“As this barriers to an ongoing police investigation, the Lagos State Police Command reached out to the author of this article for details that would help the police finish/close the investigation.”
“Shockingly, yet, the author proclaimed he could not ascertain the story but took it from an online blog.”
The author did not even give credit to the original source of news in accordance with basic ethics of journalism, and he also did not make any attempt to check the facts of the news, therefore making himself exposed to the spreading of fake news, explicitly knowing how crucial and sensitive the news contains the facts.
It is equally criminal to degrade criminal investigations and block police officers from discharging their duties.
The Police command ensured Nigerians that the ongoing investigation had been re-focused properly while available leads were still followed.
