KANO – Subscribers of major networks in Kano have expressed frustration over poor internet and call services in the metropolis, calling for urgent regulatory intervention to address the issue.
In separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday, several residents highlighted the significant hardships they have faced due to the unreliable services.
Moses Isiyaku, one of the affected subscribers, shared his ordeal, noting that the inconsistent internet and call services had caused him considerable inconvenience. “I missed an important flight to Lagos because I couldn’t get through to confirm my booking. This situation has brought untold hardship to Nigerians,” Isiyaku lamented.
Abubakar Isah, a local businessman, echoed Isiyaku’s sentiments, describing the recent spate of connection failures, poor data service, and fluctuating networks as a severe impediment to daily activities. “The network providers in the country are not sensitive to the plight of subscribers. We are suffering,” he stated.
Isah acknowledged the efforts of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) over the years but urged the body to intensify its oversight and ensure network providers uphold their service obligations. “The NCC has done well in the past, but now it must protect subscribers more vigorously,” he added.
Ahmed Nuhu, an internet cafe operator in Kano, expressed similar concerns, noting a decline in the quality of telecommunication services. “The telecommunication systems in the country have not been doing well recently. It’s affecting our businesses and everyday communications,” Nuhu said.
He called on regulatory bodies to intervene and address what he described as the telecom providers’ “oppression” of subscribers. “We need the authorities to step in and rescue Nigerians from this unacceptable situation,” Nuhu urged.
Maryam Adamu, a school teacher, also voiced her dissatisfaction with the current state of services, urging telecom operators to prioritize improvements. “Nigerians are angry. The operators seem to care only about their profits and not about providing quality service,” Adamu remarked.
She called for a comprehensive review of the modalities for service provision to ensure that the needs of subscribers are met. “The telecom operators must work on how to improve their services. We deserve better,” Adamu concluded.
The repeated complaints from subscribers have put a spotlight on the challenges faced by telecom users in Kano, prompting calls for the NCC to take immediate action. The regulatory body has previously been lauded for its efforts to regulate the industry, but current service deficiencies have raised questions about the effectiveness of ongoing oversight.
In response to these concerns, industry experts suggest that a combination of increased investment in infrastructure and stricter regulatory measures may be necessary to address the persistent issues.
The NCC has yet to release an official statement regarding the recent complaints, but observers believe that a proactive approach from the commission is essential to restore confidence in the country’s telecommunication services.
As the situation continues to unfold, subscribers in Kano remain hopeful that their voices will be heard and that necessary steps will be taken to improve internet and call services in the metropolis.
