OSOGBO, Osun State — A wave of discontent swept through the streets of Osogbo on Tuesday as protesters gathered to voice their frustrations over the escalating economic challenges facing Nigeria.
The demonstration was sparked by the removal of fuel subsidies, a decision made by President Bola Tinubu’s administration that has contributed to soaring food prices and an overall increase in the cost of living.
The protesters, estimated to number in the hundreds, convened at the Nelson Mandela Freedom Park at Old Garage before embarking on a peaceful march through key areas of the capital.
Their route took them through Oke-Fia, Dada Estate, and Dele Yes Sir, finally culminating at the Olaiya flyover junction after passing along the bustling Oba Adesoji Aderemi Way.
Carrying placards that read, “Reinstate Fuel Subsidies” and “Enough is Enough,” the demonstrators chanted solidarity songs, calling for immediate action from the government to alleviate the burdens faced by everyday Nigerians.
Many participants expressed their concerns about how the removal of the subsidies has exacerbated poverty and made basic necessities increasingly unaffordable.
“We are here to tell President Tinubu that the removal of fuel subsidies is hitting us hard. Prices of food and other essential items have skyrocketed,” lamented Adeola Bakare, a participant in the protest.
“We can’t continue to suffer while those in power make decisions that affect our lives without considering the consequences.”
Security operatives were deployed to monitor the demonstration, ensuring that the march remained peaceful and orderly. Their presence reassured both protesters and bystanders, with no reports of violence or disturbances throughout the event.
The protest in Osogbo reflects a growing sentiment among Nigerians who are increasingly frustrated with the economic situation.
The removal of fuel subsidies was aimed at addressing long-standing fiscal challenges but has instead led to an immediate spike in living costs, prompting public outcry across various states.
