The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a prophetess, Mrs. Folashade Adekola, in connection with the death of a woman, Jumoke Adesuwa, and her newborn baby after childbirth at the suspect’s church in Akure, the state capital.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, has sparked an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
According to reports, the deceased, Jumoke Adesuwa, bled to death from complications during childbirth while inside the church located in the Oke-Aro area of Akure. Tragically, the baby also died shortly after birth.
The police were alerted to the situation after the deceased’s brother filed a report at the Akure police station, prompting the arrest of Mrs. Adekola, who is accused of being responsible for the care during the delivery.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the arrest and the ongoing investigation into the case.
She stated that the suspect was apprehended after the victim’s brother reported that his sister had died following complications during childbirth in the church premises.
Mrs. Odunlami assured the public that the prophetess is currently in custody and that authorities are carefully looking into the circumstances of the tragic incident.
“This case was reported by the deceased’s brother, stating that his sister died after childbirth in the church. The prophetess is in custody, and investigations are ongoing,” Mrs. Odunlami said.
It is not yet clear whether the death was caused by negligence or other factors, as the investigation is still in its early stages. However, the police are reportedly working to determine the full details of what transpired before and after the delivery.
The church where the incident took place is reportedly known for holding prayer sessions and religious services, but it is not known whether it has the proper medical facilities or personnel to handle childbirths.
The death has raised concerns about unregulated religious practices and the safety of individuals who seek medical care in such non-medical settings.
Family members and the public have expressed shock and sorrow over the incident, demanding accountability and thorough investigation.
The tragic deaths of Jumoke Adesuwa and her newborn have left the community in mourning, as they await further details from the authorities.
As the investigation continues, it remains to be seen what charges, if any, the prophetess may face. The police are expected to release more information as they gather evidence and speak to witnesses.
The case has also sparked wider discussions about the role of religious leaders in providing medical care and the potential dangers of relying on unlicensed practitioners in life-threatening situations.
