The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Warri Zone, has uncovered an illegal baby factory operating under the disguise of a medical hospital along Orhuwhorun Road in Udu Local Government Area of Delta State.
Confirming the shocking discovery, Chairman of the NMA Warri Zone, Dr. Djebah Bright, revealed that the facility was exposed during the association’s routine monitoring exercise aimed at clamping down on medical quackery and unregistered hospitals.
According to him, four babies were found inside the unlicensed facility, which was being operated by unqualified individuals posing as medical professionals.
“We were on our routine monthly monitoring in our zone for medical quacks and unregistered hospital facilities when we discovered this,” Dr. Bright said.
The NMA immediately alerted the police, who swiftly responded to the situation. Security operatives arrested the operator of the illegal establishment as well as an auxiliary nurse who was found feeding the babies at the time of the raid.
“The said owner of the illegal health facility was arrested alongside one of her auxiliary nurses,” Dr. Bright confirmed.
He further disclosed that the rescued babies were transferred by the police to an orphanage in Asaba, Delta State capital, for proper care and protection.
“The babies are now at an undisclosed orphanage home in Asaba,” he added.
The discovery has sent shockwaves across the region, highlighting the dangers posed by medical quackery and illegal health facilities. Baby factories, which often operate under the pretense of hospitals, maternity homes, or orphanages, have been a recurring menace in parts of Nigeria, raising serious human rights and child protection concerns.
Dr. Bright reiterated the association’s commitment to safeguarding public health and protecting vulnerable members of society by exposing quack practices and shutting down fake medical facilities. He assured that the NMA would continue its regular monitoring exercises across Warri Zone and beyond.
“This is part of our ongoing commitment to ensure that quacks are flushed out of the system, and illegal facilities like this are permanently closed,” he emphasized.
Meanwhile, the Delta State Police Command confirmed the arrests and noted that investigations were ongoing to unravel the full extent of the illegal activities at the facility. Authorities are expected to charge the suspects once investigations are concluded.
Public health experts have consistently warned against patronizing unregistered medical centers, stressing that such facilities often lack the proper qualifications, equipment, and oversight to provide safe healthcare.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the urgent need for stricter enforcement of medical regulations in Nigeria, where quackery continues to undermine healthcare delivery.
The NMA urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious medical establishments in their communities to relevant authorities.
As the rescued babies receive care in Asaba, security operatives continue to investigate the network behind the illegal facility, raising hopes that justice will be served and similar operations curbed in the region.
