Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi, who currently plays for Nottingham Forest in the English Premier League, has sparked a heated debate with his bold statement that Nigeria surpasses the United Kingdom in several key areas.
Speaking in a recent interview with Livescore, the 26-year-old forward expressed immense pride in his home country, highlighting various aspects of Nigerian culture that he believes outperform those of the UK.
Awoniyi, who made a move to the Premier League in 2022, is one of the brightest talents in Nigerian football and has been a prominent figure for both club and country.
Despite his career in England, he emphasized his enduring connection to Nigeria, calling it his “ultimate holiday destination.”
When asked to elaborate on what makes Nigeria stand out, Awoniyi first pointed to the nation’s rich culinary offerings. “Nigerian food is the best in the world,” he declared, underscoring the nation’s flavorful dishes as a major cultural asset.
He praised local staples such as jollof rice, pounded yam, and suya, asserting that the vibrant, hearty flavors of Nigerian cuisine are unmatched.
In addition to food, the striker also highlighted Nigeria’s celebrated football history, particularly its legendary players.
With icons like Jay-Jay Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu, and the late Rashidi Yekini having made a global impact, Awoniyi believes Nigeria’s football legacy stands tall in comparison to the UK’s.

Awoniyi named Nigerian rapper Olamide as his favorite musician, citing the artist’s influence in shaping the current music culture. “Olamide is a king in Nigerian music, and his work inspires me,” said Awoniyi.
Weather and fashion were also among the factors that Awoniyi believes give Nigeria an edge over the UK. He spoke fondly of Nigeria’s tropical climate, contrasting it with the often grey and rainy weather in the UK.
“Nigeria’s weather is warm and vibrant, just like the people,” he remarked, adding that it contributes to the country’s lively spirit.
Awoniyi also took time to praise his fellow Nigerian footballer, Victor Osimhen, calling him the most fashionable player in the Super Eagles squad.
Osimhen, who plays for Serie A giants Napoli, has made a name for himself both on and off the pitch with his fashionable outfits and striking looks. “Victor is always looking sharp, and he has a great sense of style,” Awoniyi said with admiration.
