LAGOS, NIGERIA – Nigerian vehicle importers may soon face significantly higher costs following plans by former U.S. President Donald Trump to impose a 25 per cent tariff on automobile imports, freight forwarders have warned.
The proposed tariff, which is part of broader trade measures affecting international commerce, could have major implications for Nigeria’s auto market, which relies heavily on imports from the United States and other global manufacturers.
According to a report by Reuters on Wednesday, Trump’s administration is poised to introduce the new levies on April 2.
The move aligns with his long-standing criticism of what he perceives as unfair trade practices disadvantaging American automotive exports in foreign markets.
“The European Union, for instance, collects a 10 per cent duty on vehicle imports, four times the U.S. passenger car tariff rate of 2.5 per cent. The U.S., though, collects a 25 per cent tariff on pickup trucks from countries other than Mexico and Canada, a tax that makes the vehicles highly profitable for Detroit automakers,” the report stated.
Trade experts and freight forwarders in Nigeria have raised concerns over the impact of these measures on vehicle importation into the country.
Speaking on the development, the Head of the Department of Shipping and Terminals of the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF), Mr. Nnadi Ugochukwu, emphasized the potential financial burden on importers.
“This decision by the U.S. President will definitely affect vehicle importation into Nigeria,” Ugochukwu stated. “Most of the vehicles shipped to Nigeria from the U.S. will now attract higher costs due to the increased tariffs, which will ultimately be passed on to Nigerian buyers.”
Nigeria remains a key market for used and new vehicles, with a significant percentage of its imports coming from North America.
The additional tariffs could result in price hikes for car buyers in Nigeria, further straining affordability in an economy where imported automobiles are already expensive due to currency fluctuations and high import duties. “The tariff increase will likely push Nigerian importers to look towards Asia and Europe for more affordable vehicle options,” Ekpe explained. “It could also lead to a rise in smuggling activities, as some traders may seek ways to bypass the higher costs.”
