ABEOKUTA, NIGERIA – Controversial Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has pledged to turn a new leaf following his release on bail after pleading not guilty to multiple charges, including conspiracy, assault, and disorderly conduct.
The Ogun State Magistrate Court in Isabo, Abeokuta, granted the Zazu crooner bail on Thursday, setting the amount at N2 million.
His arraignment followed allegations of assaulting three officials of the Ogun Planning and Development Permit Authority (OGPDPA).
The officials were reportedly attacked while carrying out their duties, prompting the Ogun State police command to take legal action against the singer.
Portable’s court appearance drew significant public attention, given his history of controversy and frequent clashes with authorities. The musician, known for his erratic behavior and social media rants, pleaded not guilty to the five-count charge before being granted bail.
Singer Expresses Gratitude, Vows to Focus on Wealth
Shortly after regaining his freedom, Portable took to social media to express his gratitude and announce a shift in focus from controversy to financial success.
“My fans, thank God for everything. If you have God, you have everything,” he said in a video shared online. “I need money. I am not looking for trouble anymore. I’m now focused on making money. I have N2 million bail debt. I need more money. I am looking for money.”
His statement suggested a newfound resolve to avoid conflicts that have frequently placed him at odds with law enforcement.
The singer, who has built a reputation for his raw, unfiltered persona, appeared to acknowledge the financial strain caused by his legal battles, reinforcing his commitment to prioritize his career and earnings.
A History of Controversy
Portable has been no stranger to controversy since rising to fame in 2021 with his hit song Zazu Zeh. He has been involved in multiple public altercations, including a past legal dispute in April 2023, where he resisted arrest and verbally attacked police officers.
The artist has also been accused of fostering gang-related activities and making inflammatory statements online.
Despite his controversies, Portable remains a prominent figure in Nigeria’s street-hop music scene. His unconventional approach and energetic performances have earned him a loyal fan base, though his legal troubles continue to overshadow his musical achievements.
What Lies Ahead?
As Portable embraces his newfound resolve to focus on wealth rather than conflict, industry observers and fans alike remain skeptical about whether he can truly distance himself from trouble.
Some supporters have expressed hope that the legal ordeal serves as a turning point in his career, while critics argue that his unpredictable nature makes it difficult to trust his commitment to change.
For now, Portable’s immediate challenge remains clearing his N2 million bail debt, a concern he openly acknowledged in his post-bail video.
Whether his promise to stay out of trouble will hold remains to be seen, but one thing is certain—his latest brush with the law has once again placed him in the media spotlight.
