The United States of America (US) authorities have authorized evacuating all non-essential staff and their family in Nigeria. This announcement has come following an increased threat of terrorist attacks in the African Nation.
According to the reports, the announcement came from the US state department on Tuesday, October 25, 2022. At the time, the US State Department was providing an update on its Nigeria travel advisory.
The update specified that the US embassy in the capital city of Nigeria, Abuja, would have “limited ability” to provide emergency assistance to US citizens. Meanwhile, the consulate in Lagos will continue to provide routine and emergency services.
The update given out by the US State Department read, On (Tuesday) October 25, 2022, the Department authorized the departure of non-emergency US (United States) government employees and family members due to the heightened risk of terrorist attacks.
Further, the update specified, The US Embassy in Abuja continues to have limited ability to provide emergency assistance to US citizens residing in Nigeria. The US Consulate in Lagos is continuously providing all routine and emergency services to US citizens in Nigeria.
In light of the situation, the United States of America has issued an advisory for its citizens. The advisory also indicates that Nigeria is rated at Level 3. This rating translates into the order that the citizens (of America) should reconsider travelling to the country.
Although Nigeria is a Level 3 country, some states in the nation have a higher risk of attacks. These nations are thus put at Level 4 — which means Americans should not travel to such places.
The US state department has warned that terrorists may attack with little or no warning. They will target public places like shopping centres, malls, markets, hotels, places of worship, restaurants, bars, schools, government installations, and transportation hubs.
