Nigeria has clinched Africa’s exclusive berth in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Under-19 Women’s World Cup, set to take place in Malaysia from January 18 to February 2, 2025.
The confirmation of Nigeria’s qualification came after the final match of the Under-19 Africa Qualifiers against Zimbabwe was washed out due to heavy rain, leaving Nigeria unbeaten throughout the tournament.
The much-anticipated final was held at Gahanga International Stadium in Kigali, where Nigeria won the toss and elected to bat. The team managed to score 77 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their allotted 20 overs.
In response, Zimbabwe started their innings strongly, reaching 19 runs for the loss of one wicket in just 2.3 overs before torrential rain disrupted play, ultimately leading to the match’s abandonment.
ICC officials subsequently declared Nigeria the winner based on their unbeaten record throughout the qualifiers, as they had topped their group with consistent performances.
The tournament journey for the Nigerian squad included significant victories, beginning with a four-wicket win against Tanzania, a narrow one-wicket triumph over Zimbabwe, and a commanding 86-run victory against Malawi.
In the semi-final, Nigeria showcased their prowess by defeating the host nation, Rwanda, by 62 runs, which paved their way to the final match.
Uyi Akpata, President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF), expressed his pride in the team’s achievement. He commended the players for their commitment and resilience throughout the tournament.
“First, I must thank the players for their boldness and dedication to this project. The board members have been very supportive, and I will not forget the coaches and the technical team behind them,” he said.
Akpata acknowledged that while the qualification is a monumental achievement, the World Cup will present a more significant challenge.
He emphasized the need for increased resources and a comprehensive plan to ensure a successful campaign in Malaysia. “All hands must be on deck, and it starts now,” he added, underscoring the importance of collective effort moving forward.
The Nigerian team’s success is a testament to the growth of women’s cricket in the country and the increasing competitiveness of African teams on the global stage.
Nigeria will compete in Group C at the World Cup alongside formidable opponents such as New Zealand, South Africa, and Samoa.
As the players and coaching staff begin preparations for the World Cup, there is a palpable sense of excitement and determination within the team.
The upcoming tournament will not only serve as a platform for Nigeria to showcase its cricketing talent but also to inspire the next generation of female cricketers in the country.
With their eyes firmly set on making a mark at the World Cup, the Nigerian Under-19 women’s team is ready to embrace the challenges ahead and aims to make their nation proud on an international stage.
