Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari will depart from Abuja on Wednesday, June 22, for Kigali, Rwanda, where he is invited to attend the 26th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), which started on June 20 and will be concluded on June 26, 2022.
This was disclosed by Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser to the President, who stated that Buhari would be joining other major leaders to partake in discussions regarding the progress and prosperity of more than two billion people residing in 54 independent nations in Asia, Africa, the Americas, the Pacific and Europe that make up the Commonwealth.
‘Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating, Transforming’ is the theme of CHOGM 2022, and the different heads of government will reconfirm their commitment towards upholding the Commonwealth Charter, which concentrates on democracy, the rule of law, human rights, and sustainable development and economic opportunities.
The President of Nigeria will be present during the opening ceremony that will be held on June 24 and will also take part in high-level meetings of Heads of State and Government on June 24, Saturday and June 25, Sunday.
The authorities of various countries will talk about topics including post-COVID-19 economic recovery, climate change, debt sustainability, poverty reduction, employment, trade, youth entrepreneurship and food security.
Buhari will also present remarks during the High-Level Session of Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases Summit and participate in an Intergenerational Dialogue for Youth.
The Nigerian President will go along with the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed; the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama; the Minister of Environment, Mohammed Abdullahi the Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire and the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Pantami.
Other people in Buhari’s entourage will involve the National Security Adviser, Maj-Gen Babagana Monguno (Rtd), Director General of National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ahmed Rufa’i Abubakar and the Chairman/CEO Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NidCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa.
Adesina revealed that President Buhari would return to the country on Sunday, June 26.
