PM Drew pledges to transform St. Kitts and Nevis into sustainable island state

The Prime Minister, Dr. Terrance Drew shared about their vision of making St. Kitts and Nevis, a sustainable island state by 2040 in the address given by him at the Global Sustainable Island Summit.

The Prime Minister, Dr. Terrance Drew shared about their vision of making St. Kitts and Nevis, a sustainable island state by 2040 in the address given by him at the Global Sustainable Island Summit. The summit is a three-day programme, starting from 21st May 2024 and has been scheduled to take place at Prince Edward Island, Canada

The Prime Minister was accompanied by the Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment and Climate Action, Dr. Joyelle Clarke to the summit. During the summit, the leader highlighted about the need for the urgent implementation of the measures that can tackle the devastating challenges faced by small island nations due to climate change.

He also emphasised on the need for finances to the small island nations whose efforts and dedicated towards sustainability are getting neglected. He further mentioned that small island developing states have been trapped in the island paradox.

PM Drew stated that they are neither rich nor poor to fund into their green transition and that is why they are active at UN and taking advices on climate crisis. He also highlighted that these islands are surviving because they are connected to an international financial system. The system which allows for fair and reliable access to urgent climate finance and crisis response grant funding.

PM Terrance Drew also held several important discussions with the Premier of Prince Edward Island, Dennis King ahead of the summit. He also held a bilateral meeting with the CEO of Island Innovation, James Ellsmoor and exchanged their dialogues on the potential of synergies.

The synergies with private and public partnerships will play a crucial role in building capacity through education and policy.

CEO Ellsmoor also lauded Prime Minister, Dr. Terrance Drew for his leadership qualities and unwavering commitment towards making St Kitts and Nevis, a sustainable nation.

PM Terrance Drew is expected to deliver his crucial address at the 4th Global Conference of Small Island Developing States. The summit has been scheduled to take place from 27th May to 30th May 2024 in St John’s Antigua and Barbuda.
