Kano State: Chinese national pleads not guilty of ex-girlfriend’s murder

The murderer of Ummukulsum Buhari, Chinese national Geng Quanrong, pleaded not guilty in a court of law in Kano state.

The ongoing trial for the murder of Ummukulsum Buhari by the hand of her boyfriend, Chinese national Geng Quanrong, has taken an unexpected turn after the accused murderer pleaded not guilty in a court of law in Kano state.

Reportedly, the lawyers presented Geng Quanrong in front of the high court sitting in Kano. The hearing was held on October 27, 2022, in which the primary suspect in the murder of Ummukulsum Buhari pleaded not guilty. Quanrong did so after the charges were read to him.

The charges, read originally in English, were translated for Quanrong by a Chinese translator. The Chinese national Geng Quanrong was charged with one (1) charge bothering on culpable homicide contrary to section 221 (b) of the penal code.

Bar. Musa A. Lawan, the Prosecution counsel and Attorney General of Kano State, provided the defendant with a translator, who read his charges to him in his preferred language, Chinese.

After the defendant denied the charge against him, the Prosecution counsel and Attorney General, Lawan, appealed for an adjournment date. The demand for another date was made so that Prosecutor Lawan could present their witnesses on the matter before the court.

Following this, Justice Sanusi Ado Ma’aji, the judge hearing the case of homicide, granted the plea and adjourned the matter to 16th, 17th and 18th November 2022 for further hearing.

It is worth noticing that the 47-year-old resident of Nassarawa GRA Quarters Kano, allegedly went to the residence of the (now) deceased victim, Ummukulsum Buhari, on Friday night and attacked her with a sharp knife. The attack inflicted several deep cuts on her neck and some other parts of her body, which led to her death.

Reportedly, the mother of the deceased, Ummukulsum Buhari is an eyewitness of her daughter’s murder.

The hearing of the case has been repeatedly postponed owing to the non-availability of a translator.
