KANO, Nigeria – The Kano State Police Command has arrested an 18-year-old woman, Saudat Jibril, for allegedly killing her husband, Salisu Idris, by slitting his throat with a sharp knife at their residence in Farawa Quarters.
The tragic incident was confirmed in a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, Superintendent Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa. According to the statement, the police responded swiftly after receiving a distress report of the alleged murder.
“The suspect allegedly used a sharp knife to cut the throat of her husband, Salisu Idris, aged 30,” Kiyawa stated. “Upon receiving the report, the Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel, directed a team of detectives to the scene.”
The police team, upon arrival, found the victim in critical condition and immediately rushed him to the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital. Unfortunately, medical personnel on duty confirmed Idris dead upon arrival.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and the police have launched a full-scale investigation to uncover the circumstances that led to the fatal altercation. The suspect, Saudat Jibril, is currently being held in custody at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Homicide Section of the command.
Kiyawa disclosed that the suspect will be charged with culpable homicide, a serious offense under Nigerian law that could lead to a life sentence or capital punishment if convicted.
In the statement, CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel reiterated the command’s commitment to maintaining law and order in Kano State and emphasized that acts of violence would not be tolerated under any circumstances.
“The Kano State Police Command remains resolute in its commitment to ensuring that all perpetrators of violence face the full weight of the law,” the commissioner was quoted as saying. “We will not tolerate any form of criminality, particularly those involving loss of life.”
Kiyawa also appealed to residents of Kano to remain law-abiding and to assist security agencies in the fight against crime by reporting suspicious activities. He urged the public to make use of the police emergency numbers for prompt action in times of crisis.
“The command urges the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through the emergency lines: 08032419754, 08123821575, and 09029292926,” he added.
The incident has sent shockwaves throughout the Farawa community, where neighbors expressed disbelief over the violent event. As investigations continue, many await further details about what led to the fatal confrontation between the young couple.
This case adds to growing concerns over domestic violence and rising cases of spousal killings in various parts of Nigeria. Authorities have repeatedly called for greater awareness and intervention in domestic disputes to prevent such tragedies.
As the legal process unfolds, the Kano State Police Command has assured the public that justice will be pursued diligently in the matter.
