No less than 30 individuals have lost their lives during an auto crash which took place along the Zaria-Kano Expressway, Hawan Mai Mashi in Makarfi Local Government Area of Kaduna State of Nigeria.
The accident took place on Thursday, July 21, around 5:30 in the evening.
As per the Assistant Corps Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in charge of Zaria Zone, Abdurahman Yakasai, the accident involved three vehicles and was caused by overspeeding.
Yakasai confirmed the accident and stated that the auto crash involved a Volkswagen Gulf car and two Toyota 18-Seater buses, further adding that it was caused by overspeeding and wrong overtaking.
It was reported that 12 of the passengers also got various levels of injuries in the multiple accident.
He stated that those who have got injuries were immediately taken to the nearby hospital, Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, by the corps and the remains of the deceased were also sent to the morgue of the same hospital.
He also added that the travellers were burnt so much that they couldn’t be recognized, and the agency was making efforts to acquire the manifest and the details of the ones who lost their lives in the crash.
The victims were hardly saved because of the fact that the vehicles involved in the crash went up in flames, which made it difficult to rescue the people.
The unit commander, who ascribed the auto crash to dangerous overtaking and overspeeding, stated that the FRSC was yet to confirm the registration numbers of the vehicles because they were burnt beyond recognition.
On the other hand, an eye-witness and an FRSC personnel, Suleiman Mohammed, stated that because of the fire that engulfed the three vehicles, people could not generate much assistance in recovering the victims.
The injured people are being treated in the hospital.
