As the November 16 governorship election in Ondo State approaches, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reiterated its commitment to conducting a credible, transparent, and inclusive electoral process.
During a press briefing held in Akure over the weekend, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola, provided updates on the preparations for the upcoming election.
Highlighting the significance of voter participation, Babalola revealed that 58,708 new voters have been registered, significantly boosting the electoral register ahead of the polls.
Additionally, she noted that there has been a transfer of voter registrations, with 3,132 individuals moving their registration into Ondo State and 123 transferring out.
The REC disclosed that the updated voter statistics indicate a total of 2,053,061 eligible voters who will partake in the election.
This number includes over 1,034,006 male voters, 1,019,055 female voters, and a diverse demographic of youths, middle-aged individuals, and senior citizens.
Specifically, the breakdown shows 726,944 youths, 721,982 middle-aged individuals, 441,516 elderly voters, 162,619 senior citizens, and 1,782 Persons With Disabilities (PWDs).
Babalola pointed out that while there are three political parties without agents at all levels of polling and collation, INEC remains dedicated to ensuring a smooth electoral process. “INEC is fully committed to conducting a credible, transparent, and inclusive election in Ondo State,” she affirmed.
In terms of logistics, Babalola announced that the distribution of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) from the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise will commence soon.
She urged all registered voters from previous registration cycles who have yet to collect their PVCs to do so, emphasizing that the collection process is ongoing at local council offices.
To facilitate easier access to voter cards, Babalola assured the public that the commission would simplify the collection process and establish PVC collection centers in all Registration Areas (RAs) and local government areas.
This initiative aims to ensure that all eligible voters have the opportunity to participate in the electoral process.
As the election date draws nearer, INEC’s proactive measures and transparency in communication are crucial in building trust among the electorate.
