India welcomes UNSC decision to place LeT terrorist Makki under sanctions

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has decided to list the Pakistan Based Lashkar-e-Tayyiba deputy Leader as a global terrorist.

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has decided to list the Pakistan Based Lashkar-e-Tayyiba deputy Leader as a global terrorist. The Ministry of External Affairs of India has welcomed this decision of the UNSC. Abdul Rehman Makki is the brother-in-law of LeT leader Hafiz Saeed.

Following the decision of the UNSCto Makki to the list of their sanctions, the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson noted that Abdul Rehman Makki had held various offices of leadership in the Lashkar-e-Tayyiba. According to Arindam Bagchi, he was responsible for raising funds for the organization.

The Ministry of External Affairs further noted that the threat of terrorism remains high in the region. They commended the United Nations Security Council for their listings and sanctions. These are effective ways to curb these threats and dismantle terror infrastructure in the area.

Notably, India has maintained zero tolerance regarding terrorism. The MoEA spokesperson Bagchi noted that India will continue to urge the international community to act against terrorism.

Last year in June 2022, India criticised china for blocking the proposal to list Abdul Rehman Makki under the UNSC Sanctions. China has recently removed the technical hold put on listing the LeT Terrorist under the UNSC.

The listing came on Monday, January 16, 2022. Reportedly, The United States of America and India have already listed Abdul Rehman Makki as a terrorist and terror threat in their respective domestic laws. Makki is involved in raising funds, recruiting and radicalizing youth to violence and planning attacks in India. The indian state on the terrorist redar especially in Jammu and Kashmir.

United States of America has termed the Lashkar-e-Tayyiba as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO).According to USA, Abdul Rehman Makki has assumed various leadership roles in Lashkar-e-Tayyiba. At the same time, he also played a role in raising funds for LeT operations.

America was the co-designatuing state when India submitted Makki’s case in front of the UN Security Council. However, at the time one of the member states has placed a technical hold on the listing. Further, the state had renewed the hold.
