The heavy rainfall experienced in Kano during the last few weeks has brought to the surface another fatal challenge of poor environmental management in the state of Nigeria.
Around five known deaths of unofficial people have occurred at various locations where heavy downpours buried the drainages, resulting in riders or trekkers falling into deep open culverts, leading to their deaths or severe injuries.
Earlier during this week, the dead body of a teenage girl was discovered near Shataletalen Dangi of Tarauni local government when some fine Samaritans were looking for a man and his children who fell in the ditch.
The details of the man’s location or his kids have not been officially disclosed even on Saturday, July 23.
Also, on last Wednesday of the outgoing week, the Kano State fire service stated that it discovered the dead body of a 25 year-old-man, Ghaddafi Sale, inside a drain near the Kundila housing estate.
Reports stated he was washed away by the heavy flood.
Though the Kano State Fire service and the Ministry of Environment of the state did not answer calls put through to them by the sources, Suleiman Gidado Isma’il, an environmental expert, accused the occurrences on the poor urban planning system of the state.
Gidado stated though Kano has an urban design, some of the trenches were left open, while vandals robbing the slabs also contribute to the fatal dangers.
He warned that the harmful environmental practices have ripple as well as long time impacts, asking people to save their lives via responsible environmental practices.
