There were no reports of injuries after two rockets fired from Gaza early Saturday morning dropped into the Mediterranean Sea near the Israeli city of Tel Aviv, according to the Israeli army.
A statement from the army claimed, “Earlier this morning, two rocket launches from the Gaza Strip were spotted and were headed toward the Mediterranean Sea.”
“The rockets were launched from the coast of the Tel Aviv Metropolitan Area,” the statement continued.
According to the IDF, no alarms were heard, and Israel’s Iron Dome rocket interception system did not go into action.
It was unclear who was responsible for firing the projectiles. No one, including Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist group that rules Gaza, took responsibility for the attack.
Because of the impoverished enclave’s vulnerability, Israel has maintained a blockade against it since 2007, when Hamas gained control.
The Hamas rocket-firing campaign against Israel erupted last year during an 11-day battle started by tensions in the Israeli capital of Jerusalem.
A tenuous ceasefire came into effect in late May, and the military reported in an annual report released at the end of December, before the current attacks, that only five rockets or mortar rounds had been fired from Gaza into Israeli territory since then.
